dragojustine: (Science fiction)
I left fandom for a couple months (because of my AMAZING SUMMER JOB OMG) so of course I missed Space Girl by [personal profile] charmax until now. It is, of course, an amazing vid. It's basically the entire history of televised science fiction as seen through the lens of female characters, with all the kitch and tropes and awesomeness and awe that suggests. Amazing.

Speaking of which.

On Friday, this happened for the last time.

in which I am sentimental, also tl;dr )

Everyone -- EVEYONE -- who feels even the smallest fraction of what I do about this needs to go watch To Touch the Face of God by [livejournal.com profile] destina, and good luck to the Atlantis crew for their safe return home.

Watch this. No, really, watch it. )
(Yes, right, "Justine is a sucker for a counter-tenor," I know, I know, what else is new. But the video editing is awesome too!)
dragojustine: (Glam)
Adam does an encore in Amsterdam. There is nothing about that video that does not fill me with glee forever. Oh Adam.

My life right now is so astonishingly perfect and full of fun and and awesome things and wonderful people and love that I am not really quite sure how to take it all in. I expect finals will smack me around good, given that I'm a full week behind on all my classwork, but. I am trying to think of how life could be better right now, and I can't think of anything that doesn't involve a winning lotto ticket.
dragojustine: (whimsy)
*Stitch and bitch lovely, very soothing, enjoyable.

*Weekend as a whole, in fact, wonderful beyond my expectations.

*I just broke out the winter sweaters and discovered I have moths. DAMMIT. I have almost no clothes that fit, and absolutely no professionally-appropriate clothes (which is about to become a hugely expensive problem in my life). I really cannot afford this.

*Because I am utterly in love with my new city, Wired's What a hundred million 311 calls reveal about New York. Because I am the sort of dork that finds urban planning fascinating.

*Law school workload has just pushed me past "frantic and terrified" and into the realm of cheerful "who gives a shit." I mean, I obviously won't get everything done, so... fine.
dragojustine: (Just us girls)
Thank you so much to everybody. Really, I am completely blown away- I've been doing the online-friends thing for a decade, and it's still startling to me sometimes how incredible and kind and supportive people can be. Thanks especially to [personal profile] astolat, [personal profile] grey_bard, and [personal profile] watersword. (It turns out that [livejournal.com profile] par_avion, [livejournal.com profile] lierdumoa, and [personal profile] rusty_halo are pretty awesome too), and there are more of you who I would totally like to meet any time.

Anyway, personal crisis more or less disposed of, because fangirls are wonderful; back to studying!

But first, a word to the wise: Last week's Leverage was awesome like puppies and cupcakes.

Also, thanks to [personal profile] sothcweden for the awesome tip: this Tommy/Allison kinkmeme fic is the hottest het I've read in ages. Yowza. (It's almost enough for me to break out that Adam/Tommy/Allison thing I keep not writing because I'm afraid the fandom will hate me. They are all just way too hot not to be sleeping together, is all.)
dragojustine: (Glam)
I miss you all so much! And I really miss having a computer. This smartphone thing not cutting it.

But! I am moved in, and the apartment is almost habitable, even if all my clothing is still in a pile on the floor. Haven't really met anybody yet, but am getting a feel for the area. I keep having attacks of "OMG how is this my life?"

Oh, and? Adam just did "20th century boy" in concert. I KNEW it was only a matter of time before we heard him do a Velvet Goldmine song! You guys, he wants to be our toy. I could not possibly love that boy more.
dragojustine: (television)
Summer TV roundup, including Leverage and Eureka spoilers. Long and babbly. )

And two recs- SGA and Glam )

I always forget how many frogs you have to kiss to find the good stuff during Big Bang season, not to mention that I forgot that Kradam Big Bang even existed at all (I have so many more to get to!). This fic reading binge has involved lots of back-button usage and a huge backlog that I will eventually give up on, but it sure has been fun.
dragojustine: (made of awesome)

I cannot get over how much I love him.

Question: why is there no crossover fic where Adam guest-stars on Glee? It seems SO OBVIOUS. Is it because Chris is young enough that Adam/Chris would be slightly skeevy? Because I can look past that, I so totally can.
dragojustine: (Spike)
The Boy came, and it was Good. The best thing about the Boy is that I can watch fannish things with him, and it often feels quite a lot like watching fannish things with fangirls. I certainly don't need any of the reflexive self-censorship, or for that matter the embarrassment cringe reaction, that so often comes from showing straight boys fannish things.

(The Boy loves due South far more than I do, and has limitless patience for my crush on Callum, and in fact watched Hard Core Logo with me and was really struck by it. Win)

And we went paddling, and hiking, and saw Cirque du Soleil (Also Win, of course. God, people doing physically improbable things to loud music while wearing feathers and rhinestones. LOVE)

Stayed up until 3 am last night reading Future Legend- one of the better post-apocalypses I've ever read.

Don't trip off the glitz )

Those pictures are going to keep me so happy today.
dragojustine: (Glam)
Note: This might look like a pimping post. Don't be fooled; it was really just a chance for me to wallow in the awesome.

So, flist, there's this guy )

It's at this point that I'm utterly sold on him, so the rest of this post is just a link-dump, okay?

Non-fannish links )

Let's pause to point out that Adam is totally gorgeous.

And the fandom side of things )

I leave you with the very best Adam thing I've never seen anybody link to:
dragojustine: (win)
I love having athlete-crushes. I adore watching people who do things I can't even imaging doing, and I love the completely genuine, no-caveats respect I'm able to give truly great athletes. It's not a big thing- most of my crushes last for the length of an Olympics and are forgotten (except the truly astonishing, like Shaun White, or the ones that keep themselves in the public eye other ways, like Apollo Ohno), except in the few sports I follow on a yearly basis (basically just swimming and figure skating), where I'm utterly crazy about them for about two weeks per year.

But I absolutely do not fool myself into thinking they're anything but athlete-crushes. I don't know anything about these people, and my respect is narrowly about their physical abilities and dedication and mental toughness, perhaps leavened a little bit with soft-focus NBC human interest segments and a little bit of interview-charisma. I don't know enough about them for anything more than an athlete-crush, and I try to remember that.

But this Olympics... )

In other words, between a picture of Evan now appearing in the dictionary under "sportsmanship" and "graciousness," and Johnny being my hero and unbelievably classy, mens' figure skating this year has made it very hard for me to keep my athlete-crushes strictly athletic.
dragojustine: (skating)
Everybody who talks to me regularly must hate me. Swear to god, pretty soon it won't be all figure skating all the time- I'll get over it. I always do.

Let's get the inevitable out of the way: My boy Johnny was robbed. Not of a medal, mind, because he clearly wasn't in the top three, but you'll have a hard pull ahead of you trying to convince me there's any justice in him coming in behind Patrick Chan. Inevitable part 2: NBC color commentators are best seen and not heard.

In the meantime, I have discovered the following things: )

I'll just be over here watching old Brian Boitano performances on YouTube until the high wears off.
dragojustine: (skating)
An open letter to the men in tights of this Olympics )

Aside: was the "Shaun White's mother dry-cleans his medal" story not the cutest 45 seconds of footage ever aired on NBC? I had to watch that about five times.

In which I have a new man-on-ice crush )

Let us end on gratuitous note.
dragojustine: (Sherlock Holmes)
1. Fandom auction for Haiti may get off the ground in the next few days- signal boost.

ETA: You just know you want to bid on my beta-reading services. Come on, you know you do.

2. Kripke should learn that Good Fourth Walls Make Good Neighbors

3. The Boy was here. And lo, it was Very Very Good. I sort of love tour-guiding around my city. And we saw Sherlock Holmes again, which just gets better every time. I am still all happy-smiley.

4. Oh my god I need a job.

5. Somebody just got accepted to Berkeley and NYU. They like me! They really like me!
dragojustine: (Fun ever stop?)
This is not the Best Thing Ever, but it is at least in the running. (NPH and Barrowman stage a massive Twitter war. Nathan Fillion, Felicia Day, and Alyson Hannigan side with Neil. Gaimon sides with Barrowman. Whedonesque and SyFy weigh in. After Elton has pictures. Of course After Elton has pictures)

Look, I voted for Sir Ian McKellen several days ago and if I were to change it, it would be to George Takei. I'm just saying.

But if John and Neil really want this resolved once and for all, I'd say naked wrestling is the way to go.
dragojustine: (whimsy)
Adorable solider is adorable.

(I got that from [livejournal.com profile] miss_porcupine's DoD photo zen tag, which includes quite an impressive amount of plane porn and silly men jumping out of perfectly good airplanes, but also tends to show soldiers being utterly adorable. Including a video wherein a Marine greatly resembles my grandmother's sheltie (but cuter).

Abigail Nussbaum is my favorite reviewer, and I'm rather crushed by her evaluation of Star Trek. It's about half the (IMO) not very interesting criticism that Star Trek shouldn't be "updated" and about half the (again, IMO) much more valid criticism that she just didn't like this Kirk. But the real reason I point it out is for the passage where she describes her Kirk:

My Kirk was first and foremost the one from the movies. The one who got old and fat, who paid the wages of his youthful womanizing with a son who wanted nothing to do with him, and of his meteoric career with an admiralty he loathed. This Kirk was shocked, simply flabbergasted, at no longer being that brash young man who could do no wrong, but in a way he never stopped being that person. Even dying he was full of wonder and a sense of adventure.

I love character meta that makes me fall in love with that character all over again. How perfectly expressed. Oh, Kirk.

Lastly, the Clios are in! They were medium-good this year: There's the T-Mobile dance which makes me grin like a dork for the rest of the evening every time I watch it, a haunting and magical public-service ad, and the hilariously surreal Abe Lincoln. The legacy ads included one I hadn't seen before, from The Guardian.

End linkspam. I promise.
dragojustine: (feminism)
Fail #1: Amazon Rank. (Thought #1: Never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence. Thought number 2: The particular implementation of the "adult content" policy is ridiculous beyond words, but why are so few people complaining about the fact that they have such a policy at all? #3: If you do have an adult content screening system, the way to do it is to remove those items at the search level, not to fuck with your underlying database, especially not a database that has such a huge impact. That's just... *hunts for words* bad stewardship. #4: Man, they had better bend over backwards figuring out how this happened and reversing this policy and apologizing to authors and readers and EVERYONE and just kissing ass and begging for their reputation back)

Fail #2: Spent all day fixing my electrical system and freaking out because I thought I would have to pay $100 for a repair guy which I could not afford. Dodged that bullet, but my complete and total money panic is getting old.

Win #1: Dad called my uncle and had him deliver me an easter basket this morning. Swear to god, an easter basket. With a bunny. No joke. *glow*

Win #2: Paul Davis! I rec this fic/meta thing to make up for the Davis fic that I have failed to write for a week straight now because of all the various technical failures in my life. Oh, and also: John Sheppard plays Lube/not lube (post plus comment fic)

Win #3: I am name-squatting at Dreamwidth, not yet using. Decisions about journal importing and such to be made when I actually have a computer again. No, that's a lie. When I have an actual computer again I will watch a shitload of TV, spent a solid day playing Rome: Total War or Civ 4 or something, and then try again to write some fic. Then I'll think about it.
dragojustine: (Science fiction)
* I am online again, more or less, due to the amazing kindness of strangers. Seriously, I am all over [livejournal.com profile] lawrence520 and his incredible loaner laptop and willingness to give it to a total stranger, and [livejournal.com profile] hilarytamar, who seems to have embarked on a single-handed, oddly determined quest to keep me sane in my time of hardship. Seriously, I have no idea how to pay forward this level of awesome.

* I have gotten so spoiled with phone contact! All I have to say is "I'm computerless and lonely!" and all these people become willing to talk to me on the phone, often at ridiculous length. I don't know how I'll give it up. I am so warm and fuzzy you have no idea. Seriously, I feel like one of those sloppy drunks: "I love you all!" Especially you, [livejournal.com profile] bdblack and [livejournal.com profile] miriad and [livejournal.com profile] hilarytamar.

* Was that Tricia Helfer on Chuck? I adore her so much! If someone had told me that the underwear model in That Dress was going to be my favorite New Actor crush out of BSG, instead of Katee Sackhoff, I wouldn't have believed it, but I am so glad she's made good and is popping up everywhere. That said, I am getting really sick of Ellie being kept out of the loop. The show is just getting meaner and meaner to her, and it's starting to get me down.

* RE: SPN. Entertainment Weekly says "The new brother is a Wincest fan's dream come true!" *boggles* Look, I know fandom became rather blase about incest about two years ago, but in Entertainment Weekly? Bwuh?

It's not like SPN has been My Show since "In the Beginning," and I haven't even watched it since the one with the fallen angel. This is because I was breaking up with it before it could hurt me, because, as [livejournal.com profile] bdblack can confirm, I really am the guy in all my relationships. I still may catch up to it over hiatus, but adding a third brother? This show is on seriously thin ice with me.

* And since the computer died I have been reading a book a day. No, really. A little less than five days, five books.
