dragojustine: (Christmas)
[personal profile] dragojustine
Step One
- Make a post (public, friendslocked, filtered...whatever you're comfortable with) to your LJ. The post should contain your list of 10 holiday wishes. The wishes can be anything at all, from simple and fandom-related ("I'd love a Snape/Hermione icon that's just for me") to medium ("I wish for _____ on DVD") to really big ("All I want for Christmas is a new car/computer/house/TV.") The important thing is, make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want.

- If you wish for real life things (not fics or icons), make sure you include some sort of contact info in your post, whether it's your address or just your email address where Santa (or one of his elves) could get in touch with you.

- Also, make sure you post some version of these guidelines in your LJ, so that the holiday joy will spread.

Step Two
- Surf around your friendslist (or friendsfriends, or just random journals) to see who has posted their list. And now here's the important part:

- If you see a wish you can grant, and it's in your heart to do so, make someone's wish come true. Sometimes someone's trash is another's treasure, and if you have a leather jacket you don't want or a gift certificate you won't use--or even know where you could get someone's dream purebred Basset Hound for free--do it.

You needn't spend money on these wishes unless you want to. The point isn't to put people out, it's to provide everyone a chance to be someone else's holiday elf--to spread the joy. Gifts can be made anonymously or not--it's your call.

There are no rules with this project, no guarantees, and no strings attached. Just...wish, and it might come true. Give, and you might receive. And you'll have the joy of knowing you made someone's holiday special.

My list:

1. Send me a card! And let me send you one. I adore them.
2. Upload your favorite Christmas song for me. I prefer religious Christmas music (yes, I'm a weird atheist with an emotional attachment), but I'll try anything.
3. For that matter, upload ANY song I'll like. The main criteria here is "things that can be sung by a horrible but enthusiastic singer driving very fast." My collection tips toward 70s divas and Bruce Springsteen (with that criteria, how could it not?) and I don't think I have more than five songs recorded after 2003. So, educate me!
4. I would love graphics for any fic I've written. People who get cover graphics for their fic are so special.
5. I am trying to coerce somebody into making me a journal header. In particular, a header with the TARDIS, the Stargate (SG1 version), a puddle jumper, and the metallicar. I think this would be the best header ever. Something like the Enterprise or a Viper optional... whatever, really. Isn't that an awesome idea? But I can't make it.
6. Tell me your favorite EASY recipes. Not holiday themed ones, as I have all my holiday traditions firmly sorted. No, just year-round EASY things I can make in my poorly-stocked kitchen to improve my few cooking skills. Things that make good leftovers/are easy to bring in to work for lunches are a plus.
7. I would love links/recs for original fiction. There are so many mind-blowingly good fic authors out there, and I'm sure some of them must be bending their energy toward original fic online with the same strengths, but I don't know where to find the good stuff.
8. Gift certificates for restaurants, because eating out is the main casualty of my budget, and I miss it. I mean, just stuff like Subway or Chili's, not the Ritz.
9. I would KILL for seasons of SG1, SGA, or the third season of SPN on DVD. Just KILL.
10. And lastly, for Christmas I want the TV networks to stop killing all the big shows. Somebody attend to that, please.

My address is in this filtered post. Just drop a comment and I'll get it to you, if you want.

No 6. Recipes

Look, as long as your oven is good, my most fave and easy recipe is roasted chicken. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. A glass pyrex dish wiped down with a little olive oil and lined with onion slices is how I usually start. Sometimes I add potatoes to roast, but that never comes out quite right every time.

Three pound chicken on top of the onion slices. Make sure to tuck his little wings under the breast so they don't incinerate and if you want to get fancy, tie his little leggies together with some kitchen twine. Rub his body down with one of the next three things:

1. six ounzes of yogurt mixed with various spices that you like, salt and pepper.
2. three tablespoons of butter mixed with salt and pepper (seasoned pepper blends like lemon and garlic do well here)
3. rub down with olive oil on the outside (add spices to the olive oil if you want before you rub down that bad boy) and stuff the cavity with either a lemon cut in half or a whole onion. You can also skin the breast and cover with sliced or chopped garlic. You want the garlic under the skin or it burns.

Now just one of those things please, but you can mix and match if you like the idea of stuffing the cavity. (Stuffing the cavity brings a tang of flavor to the breast meat)

Now put him in the oven for an hour. Just leave him in there. The onoins should carmelize and if you decide to try gravy (my husband makes the gravy so don't ask about that please mine never turns out) it will give a nice ioniony flavor to it. I just like carmelized onoins.

A three pound chicken feeds my husband and I and our toddler with enough left over to turn into chicken and dumplings. (if you want the recipe for that, let me konw)

Wow. I find the idea of cooking a whole chicken massively intimidating, but you make it sound so EASY! *boggles* I could almost try that!

Thank you

It actually is easy. it's the prep that takes awhile. Plan at least half and hour to get the bird ready. Also, I don't know if I made it plain. If you decide skin the breast to do the garlic thing, leave the skin attached and pull it back into place after stuffing the garlic under te skin and down on to the breast. You might have to do some stitching with kitchen twine, but as long as you haven't overloaded the garlic, it should just lay in place.

Okay, no. You made it sound bogglingly, terrifyingly complex again there, so I'm gonna pretend I never read that part :)

Really, though, thanks! The part about putting onions down to caramelize sounds especially promising.

What is the metallicar?

The Metallicar (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v604/andthatisthat/metallicar_motivator-1.jpg) is the black 1967 Chevy Impala driven by the Winchester brothers on Supernatural, and more or less the third character on the show. So named for the amount of Metallica that has been played through its speakers.

Alternatively, substitute the Serenity (the ship from Firefly). Ooh, yeah. Even better than a puddle-jumper...

Yes, I am obsessed with iconic vehicles. What tipped you off?

Aha! lol... you can tell I don't watch Supernatural!

What about RayK's car from due South? Or even Gibbs' new car ^_^

Yeah, but those aren't MY SHOWS!

(the Impala was the third character from the very first episode of the series- Gibb's new car ain't exactly on par. Though... Gibbs got a new car? It seems like every week something happens to make me think I need to start watching NCIS again!)
