I found a debate watch group to watch with last night. Yaay social interaction! With pretty Obama-voting boys. Also? I want that man to be president SO BADLY. Mental agility, clear intelligence, superb verbal skills, critical thinking, generosity and respect combined with firm and well-articulated differences of opinion grounded in fact! It's like night and day from Bush. I WANT this man to be president.

I kind of think that the casting of Castiel is the best thing that's happened to this show since the casting of John.

I still say that if Dean turns out to be Special, I will hate hate hate. But so far this season as a whole looks pretty good. And if we keep getting Castiel being world-weary and ineffable and powerful and menacing by turns, and seeing him up in Dean's face with super-closeups of his lips? Well, that will make up for a lot.

SO MUCH LOVE for that SGA episode. I love how just knowing that Ronon is on the Daedalus makes me sure that everything will be okay- Ronon, you kick so much ass. Woolsey and Caldwell were... Woolsey and Caldwell. Zelenka! So much Zelenka love. John really doesn't like being in command-- with good reason, since Jack might KILL him for losing Daniel. And John and Rodney being basically psychic from half a galaxy away. It's not quite the same as Jack and Daniel communicating volumes just by saying each other's names, but it is a very closely related sort of zing, and I LOVE it.

And, of course, the real point: Daniel and Rodney!

I loved every minute of their interaction, starting with the very first time Daniel greets Rodney. Seriously, have you ever heard so much incredibly sarcastic, "my, aren't we going to have fun?" packed into one word?

And Rodney being competitive about everything! And their wonderful moment of genuine connection on the subject of civilian academic recognition- what a perfect point of connection for those two characters. Though I admit, I had always assumed (this is probably fanon) that the civilian consultants make rather more than the equivalent military personnel (ie, Daniel makes more than Jack, at least pre-promotion, and Rodney makes more than John).

And Daniel's smile when Rodney is all, "see, my boyfriend is smart!" That man redefines gorgeous. Though I do notice that MS has put on some padding up front. But his SMILE. His smile can still just light rooms.

Pretty much from the moment they woke up in the green-laser cell and Rodney gets shocked and says "you could have warned me!" and Daniel is all, "I could have, yes," I was pretty much endlessly in love with the two of them together. I could watch them snark at each other FOREVER. I want ENDLESS amounts of RodneyandDaniel snark. And, if possible, endless super-snarky Daniel/Rodney with angsty sublimated OTP. Or! Pining!John POV of DanielandRodney snark.

And, in conclusion: Daniel Jackson, I am so hot for you.

Daniel is all, "I could have, yes," I only just now realised that Daniel is throwing Rodney's word back in his face, when he made Daniel fall through the wall.
I'm imagining a string of Rodney/Daniel one night stands, because Daniel knows it won't go anywhere and it's not tied up in so much emotional baggage (and Rodney likes getting laid).

Yes! And these encounters involve truly whithering amounts of snark. And Pining!John going "but why not meeeeee?" in the background.

(And GOOD CALL on the wording echo. I hadn't realized!)

the echoed wording happened a couple of times between them, which was lovely. I just love Daniel at his patronizing, antagonistic and arrogant best.

will have to look-n-pause for padding...it's hard to tell with him sometimes because this was filmed awfully close to his shirtless scenes in Burn Notice and while he was not 24-buff there, he was still awfully white Canadian boy pretty in it!

It certainly wasn't bad! Just made me go, "I thought that bit was flatter than that?" but there's always the weird posture/bad angle possibility. Also, I haven't seen the Burn Notice bits...

Daniel at his patronizing, antagonistic and arrogant best

And when you put it that way, *of course* he's fantastic with Rodney!

I just saw The Outer Limits episode Mary 25 and I think MS just has a slightly prominent tummy, not flabby but just a weird band of muscles or something. He was very young and slender in that but even there from the side his tummy showed that. I agree though, he's very pretty whenever, wherever.

Now ain't that the truth.

They are such secret boyfriends (I, er, may have once written a fic wherein there was off-screen Daniel/Rodney after the events of Sunday *whistles innocently*)

I saw! Didn't I leave fb? I didn't leave fb? *feels bad* I saw, and it was great. But we can't hear the snark, if it's offscreen!

Civilian base pay would probably be better (assuming they're carried at the appropriate GS levels -- it's debatable as to what GS levels the SGC would carry on paper, since it would be very odd for such a concentration of high-GS employees in one spot, but I'm pretty sure that anyone who goes through the Gate gets at least an extra GS level just, you know, out of hazard and responsibility), but military total pay, with all the adjustments, might be higher, depending on the rank in question. (And the SGC is unusually officer-heavy, but don't get me started on that.)

I speculated a while back, and people who have more experience than I do contributed in comments :)

Thanks for that link. And, uh, way to have a lot of time on your hands? Wow.

(And the SGC is unusually officer-heavy, but don't get me started on that.)

ALL military-influenced science fiction TV is unusually officer heavy. Always. Ever since Star Trek decided that the lowest-rank in the fleet was ensign (As for TOS, isn't yeoman generally a petty officer?). O'Brien is essentially the only NCO in the entire universe. No, really. Name another one. I dare you!

SG1 is actually better than most, though SGA then went back the other direction. (The new BSG gets a nod for this too) But... yes. Apparently once aliens get involved, all humans become officers. *sigh*

NCIS, on the other hand, is way more balanced -- Gibbs, for instance, was a Gunnery Sergeant (and to this day refuses to allow anyone to call him 'sir' -- "don't call me 'sir', I work for a living". *g*)

I was always amused that Star Trek only has like six ranks! Military: ur doin it rong.

Yes, but see, NCIS doesn't have aliens. It's the ALIENS who turn everybody into identically ranked officers! *nodnod*

You may be on to something. And it's mostly only TV sf that has the problem, too...

(As for the rest of it: yes, I do have way too much time on my hands. And yes, that is the kind of research I tend to do for just about everything I write.)

There are lots of ways that I find written SF to be better than TV/movie SF. But most of those ways are explainable by the limitations of filming: magical gravity generators everywhere, all planets have exactly the same gravity and atmosphere conditions, magical inertial dampeners, no intelligent consideration of inertia or g forces, tactically idiotic space battles, super-slow and magically visible energy beam weapons, fires and sound in space... yadda yadda. All explainable by limitations and expectations inherent to TV or movies.

But why the hell does the visual medium require everybody to be an officer?

(oh, look. My pet peeves! You have found them!)

You know, when [livejournal.com profile] miriad basically strapped me to her couch and forced me to watch the original Stargate movie, I said (well, FIRST I flailed and squealed and lost my shit over how hot James Spader was, but after that) I said "OMG! You mean this is a SF show that has a linguist because aliens don't speak english? And the probable language family and linguistic traits of the languages they do speak prove to be an important clue? And the aliens don't speak English?

I sort of flailed with joy, and then [livejournal.com profile] miriad had to go, "uh, well, ah, actually..."

I know. *mournful* Of all the things they changed between movie & tv show, that's the thing that annoyed me the most...

SOON, I hope. Because I do not write snark well, or I would do it myself.
