Help! SG1 canon question

Because I am still only halfway through SG1 Season 7, but I need to skip ahead to research a fic, I appeal to the collective flist wisdom: When exactly does Jack leave the SGC? I mean, it's during the Season8-season9 break, I know. But do we ever see him tell the team this decision, or see their initial reactions to it? If so, WHAT EPISODE? If not, what do we know about this?

I need this. *begs*

S9, the first two episodes. We don't see Jack tell the team, just Jack talking to (*spit*) Landry.

Nowhere in canon, to my knowledge, do they flesh out exactly what Jack is doing in DC, or why he took the promotion, or if he got his second star right then or later. And we don't even really know how long it was between Moebius and Season 9, either. You have free rein there.

It's always a bit awkward, when you read fic for a show/period of a show without having seen it- trying to figure out what's fanon and what's canon. (I am SHOCKED by how much of my SGA knowledge, for example, is completely unrelated to canon).

There are buckets and buckets of fanon in every fandom. I don't hate it as much as some, myself, but it's always good to know what factoid is in which category -- fanon or canon.
