My father has a deep and abiding love of office supplies, which he passed on to both my sister and I. There is nothing in the world more amazing and satisfying to me than a neatly organized drawer with really nice rollerball pens in many colors and mechanical pencils with little cases of lead and hanging folders and crisp pads of paper and really well-working staplers and color-coded sticky notes and... where was I? Right. See, this is something you either understand or don't. I'm just saying, Staples is better than a sex-toy store for me. I go in there and I can spend hours wandering, dragging my fingers longingly over desk organizers and accordion folders. Best of all are the miscellaneous "all-in-one" businesses, that have a pad of paper and binder rings and folder pockets and pen and business card and calculator pockets, all inside one slim leather portfolio. Those send me into paroxysms of fantasizing. And the little kiosks where you can test out different pens! And all the different ways to dispense a sticky note!

I got to spend, like, two hours in a Staples today waiting for a copy job to be done. My own collection of mismatched Bics and half-used notebooks and sticky pads filched from various temp jobs now seem so unsatisfying.

I avoid thinking about what that means about me. I'm not sure I want to know.

Swimming:
-I have NEVER screamed so hard at my TV as I did for that mens freestyle relay. Good GOD.
-Has Phelps taken some sort of vow that he's never going to break a world record unless he breaks it by at least a second? And did you all notice that he's doing that wearing only the bottom half of a fastskin suit (ie, theoretically with the full suit he'd be FASTER)? It's almost embarrassing.
-I am, however, glad that Inge de Bruin's fly record stood. I don't mean to sound mean-spirited or anything (I adore the Aussie swimmers), it's just that I watched her set that one in 2000 and it's one of the longer standing swimming records, now that new suit technology has them all falling like ninepins this decade, and sometimes it's nice to see those stand.

Other:
-Sasha Artemev would be the cutest thing in the ENTIRE WORLD (and he totally puts out with those pommel horse flares I was missing), if Jonathan Horton wasn't cuter by an order of magnitude. So excited for the women!
-The Greco-Roman wrestling guys sometimes get into this pose, with one guy on his hands and knees and the other guy draped over him. I have no idea why, but apparently they have to start like that sometimes? Anyway, if you aren't paying attention to the TV and just catch it out of the corner of your eye, it's almost startlingly suggestive. Like, "drop a plate in surprise that my TV switched to porn before I realize what's going on" suggestive.
-Like everybody else on the internet, I have discovered men's synchronized diving. I had NO IDEA. Thank you, flist, for showing me this.
-The whitewater kayaking started! EEE!
-Am so impatient for track and field I can't stand it.

So tel me, flist, what awesome sport should I be watching? What thrilling thing did I miss?

Oh god. All the shiny leather portfolios and expanding folders I could fill... *drool*

I totally expected to be laughed at for this post. Instead, it seems that office-supply fetishism is COMMON in fandom. Weird. Nobody outside my immediate family has ever understood this before!

OH so common. I love, love, love office supply stores. I avoid them like I avoid bookstores: I am crap at withstanding temptation.

Oh, and friending... for the fic, and the Olympics, and science fiction, and Supernatural and oh so much else.

Oh yeah, right there with you on the office supplies fetish. I could spend (okay, I'll admit it; I have spent) hours just browsing. Love the pens and pencils aisle, and the file folder aisle, and the calendar aisle with all the neat specialty pages and inserts for my planner.

If I didn't buy another office supply (except printer paper and calendar refills) for the next ten years, I'd probably still be adequately outfitted. Doesn't stop me from coming home with new goodies every trip. . .

I actually suspect that the reason Phelps only wears the bottom half of the RZR for the fly (he wears the full suit for freestyle) is because it would constrict his FREAKISH WINGSPAN when he's rotating his arms in unison (ie, fly) -- either his times are better without it, or swimming with it just annoys the ever-living fuck out of him enough that he'll take the hit in time.

It's just that when I was competing I had this much-faster suit that was a pain to get into, and I was winning everything without it, so I never bothered. Then I moved up a division and stopped winning everything (or, you know, anything) and promptly started wearing my fast suit to meets. (I was 12, so this was AAA, no big-deal competition). It just amuses me massively to think that the same thought process might be going on at the Olympics. Heh.

When I worked at OfficeMax, the love of office supplies gradually wore off, but there were two things that still brought joy into my life:
-explaining box-bottom hanging folders
-helping someone create an entirely new office system ("I'm re-doing my office! What do I need?" "ALL OF IT.")

Stationery hoars unite! We should write a manifesto. With a brand-shiny new rollerball, which I will then attempt to steal.

I'm so dreadfully far behind in my olympic watching, I'm trusting that you'll watch some with me. I haven't seen anything past swimming and gymnastic qualifying because dad refuses to fast forward through all the other stuff, like beach volleyball and shooting and saber.

Umm...office supplies. eeeethe wonderful fresh smell of a new notebook and neatly lined up pens all waiting to be used.

Rowing: hunky men in boats, a sight to see. Also UK is well in the shout of winning several medals in this sport.

I don't think I've ever commented on your journal (we met at the Slasher's Dinner... I think...?) but I just had to pop in and say GOD YES OFFICE SUPPLIES.

Also alsdkjalskdj men's synchronized diving. A+ Possibly one of the gayest, most beautiful sports EVAR.

Yes! I remember you. I lost internet right after I got back from comic-con, so I was bad about looking up everybody from dinner.

I *know*. I was listening to the color commentary guys during the synchronized diving. And... just... do they not hear themselves? How do they keep a straight (so to speak) face?
