dragojustine: (Reality ruins my life)

Perhaps the only SFF TV thing I am actually looking forward to these days is Game of Thrones. I'm the last person on the internet to notice the kerfuffle from that terrible review, but (for all that I have mixed opinions about his skill as a novelist), I am incredibly pleased to find out that [livejournal.com profile] grrm is a class act. He notices the geek girls, and objects when we are erased!

Via [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, [personal profile] melannen on alternate forms of marriage in SF and fantasy. I link only for the observation that SG1 is totally a line marriage (as is NCIS, I think). I gotta say, seeing late seasons SG1 as line marriage fits emotionally so perfectly I'm amazed.

I run the risk of linking to everything Abigail Nussbaum ever writes, because I have a massive crush on her brain. (See, eg, her perfect articulation of why I hated the last season of Dr Who) I don't always agree, and I tend to love her even more when I disagree, because she is always right technically and makes me articulate what it is thematically or emotionally that makes my evaluation different (See Inception and Babylon 5).

So anyway, in the same vein as her absolutely amazing, insightful, fantastic series of articles on DS9, she has just finished an equally wonderful series on TNG. This is especially great for people like me who have longstanding attachment to TNG but have never rewatched it as a unified whole with an adult perspective. It's got some really good stuff on the show's attitude toward artificial life, and the show's under-use of Geordi, and some other things. I mostly loved The tragedy of Picard, about Picard's pre-movies complexity and about the conflict between Picard's Enterprise and the Federation beyond its hull. This reading of Picard as a throwback to an earlier Federation, the last principled captain in a Federation descending into Machiavellian nightmare, isn't new to me but I find her explanation of it compelling and I'm left desperately wanting to read those stories.

God, I love that show.

The Borgias: Unexpectedly not terrible. In fact, possibly even very good. Also, I'm not sure I've ever seen production values that high in, you know, anything. Alexander aka Rodrigo is a fascinating, nuanced, incredibly acted character. Cesare is hot as fuck, and also pretty interesting. The relationship between ... new mistress (Giuilia?) and Lucrezia has absolutely amazing potential. The incest is Not At All Subtle. The casual sadism is a little breathtaking (this show has a thing for whipping).

You should all watch it.

Question for fandom at large: You will soon be providing me massive amounts of kinky intense conflicted unbearably loyal fucked up Cesare/Michelotto porn, right? I can't be the only one wanting this.

I always find interesting things when you post. Thank you!

Also, while catching up on your journal tonight I saw that you said something about having purchased Glam Nation Live, even though you already own almost all of the songs. I think that makes perfect sense. I believe in financially supporting the artists who make my world a better place, especially if they're still establishing themselves, and I couldn't resist Adam singing Twentieth Century Boy after watching Velvet Goldmine. Did you see the video of the band doing Enter Sandman in NZ last fall? Apparently, it was a gift for Tommy for his birthday. They're just so much fun!
