I had a date at a concert Friday night- the music was great fun, though the date was Not Good.

(Not Good in that the guy seems to have self-esteem issues, and a lot of awkwardness of the "not knowing when to shut up" variety. I mean, I'm really not inclined to actually date anybody here in NY right now, so he was fighting an uphill battle, but still. Also slight creepiness, including that he google-stalked me enough to find this journal. Normally I won't say anything unflattering about someone who might read, but I think he won't come back.)

But the music! Kimya Dawson and Your Heart Breaks which... Well, when I was at undergrad in Seattle you couldn't throw a rock on a weekend without hitting indie queercore and I loved that. But the flip side was that I always felt like an intruder/poser in that scene. Which was a problem- I think my own gender issues might have been a lot easier if I had felt like I could reasonably have gotten some support and friendship there. Might still be easier, for that matter, but it feels like a moot question at this point in my life. Anyway, just means I hadn't seen a show like that in going on six years.

So yes- entirely "maybe you can go home again" feeling and pleasantly unexpected (which is entirely different from "unexpectedly pleasant"). Kimya Dawson perhaps slightly more earth-mother at points than I can ever entirely empathize with, but lyrically wickedly good. (Also, lead singer of Your Heart Breaks, Clyde, did a startlingly sweet cover of my favorite Garth Brooks song while being so adorable I could eat him up wtih a spoon. Alas, I can't find it on the internet anywhere.)

Everybody in the world has already seen SG-1 The Movie. Fantastic pick-me-up.

Glam rec: The Good Times Are Killing Me, which is a month old but just surpassed Drive-By Devotion as my favorite Tommy characterization ever. I adore when he's all dudely and inarticulate and dirty-talking and has the gender politics of a caveman but is secretly pleased as punch at the idea of being the girl.

Glad the concert was good listening even if the date wasn't. It's always fun to hear about life in the big city. I hadn't heard of that band, so I'll have to check out the music.

And wow, thanks for mentioning that fic! I hadn't seen it and really, really enjoyed it. I loved how they were both unhappy for a bit because they hadn't talked it out beforehand -- which, I think, is likely what many guys would actually do rather than having a heart-to-heart before getting it on.
