Cay: Yeah if she wanted to be taken seriously she would have put it in the book.
LadyJ: Then again, the subtext was so blinding I'm not sure it counted as sub-. But I don't think she gets to crow about how she really did write a gay character when she did not give the readers the means to see that. Because author interviews aren't actually cannon
LadyJ: No, what pisses me off is that our one supposedly gay character is a man traumatized into asexuality after being literally tempted away to the dark side by his romantic entanglement. There aren't enough rolley-eyes in the world for my opinion on that.
Cay: I think she was afraid of what people would say if she made a huge role model in he book gay, specially as it's a children's book. It doesn't change my love of dumbledore one bit, so i just give rolley eyes at her little interview.
LadyJ: Well, nothing could possibly change my love of Dumbledore, but it does make me annoyed at Rowling's wishy-washy lack of courage.
LadyJ: If she wanted to include a gay character, why oh why oh why oh why couldn't she have just given us Remus/Sirius and left out the entire Remus/Tonks mess? Why oh why?
Cay: my piano teacher threw a little hissy fit and I wanted to slap her (piano teacher not rowling) because she thinks a gay character is completely inappropriate, I'm sitting at piano thinking you sad pathetic little mormon prude. methinks I would have liked Remus/Sirius, because Sirius was so sadly devoid of somebody to love.
LadyJ: My love for Sirius knows no bounds, and it pisses me off that JKR doesn't respect him.
LadyJ: He is so much more damaged and hurt and broken and yet stronger and more loving than he's shown in the books, you know?
LadyJ: And all she can do is DEATH BY DRAPERY and then kick him about his treatment of Kreacher while he's down.
LadyJ: Sometimes, you know, you fall in love with characters who are SO MUCH more interesting than they're written.
Cay: I got very angry at her for that one.
Cay: you shouldn't be allowed to make your readers fall in love with someone and then try to force them out of love by bashing them.
Cay: just not fair, not fair at all
LadyJ: I mean. Yes, he was mean to Kreacher. But the man was brainwashed as a child, broke free of that (very bravely!) to become a decent human being, only to be framed for a crime and then TORTURED FOR YEARS
LadyJ: And then break out, be kickass despite being broken and tortured and severely post-traumatic, still be a loving godfather and brave warrior despite what he's been through, only to have to live like a dog on the run and be trapped like a rat in a house that held nothing but bad memories, and yet he was STILL a loving godfather and brave warrior, and STILL held on to sanity.
LadyJ: So... yeah. He was mean to Kreacher. Suck it up.
Cay: yeah for sister rant! YEAH!
LadyJ: Hee.
LadyJ: Just start me in on Remus/Tonks :)
...
Cay: Yeah, lots of people were mean to houselves, or treated them as less than human, but they weren't picked on.
Cay: No fair...."mutter mutter*, not fair
LadyJ: Yeah. And I get that Harry is supposed to be seeing his role models accurately- black and white, warts and all, shades of grey, yadda.
LadyJ: She did the same thing with James and Dumbledore, in fact.
Cay: seriously dissappointed with rowling, 1) mean to most lovable of characters 2) wimpy wimpy unbrave writer (about the Dumbledore thing)
...
LadyJ: Tonks and Ginny both give me big huge carefully-frosted-feminist-wedding-cake-of-rage issues if I think about them too much.
Cay: I like your adjectives there, they make me happy.
LadyJ: At least you understand me on the Tonks/Remus thing. *nods* that helps.
Cay: yeah, poor Remus got jipped. Poor tonks had potential
LadyJ: Introduce kickass chick and then she loses her magical powers because she's mooning over a man. Way to go Rowling.
Cay: she did that to a few girls, a whats-her-face Voldy's mother.
LadyJ: And then they're stupid enough to forget the little contraceptive wand-wave in the middle of a WAR when really they're horribly unsuited for each other and she's just smitten with hero worship and he's just desperately looking for solace now that Sirius is gone...
Cay: I love how you're mind makes up a whole alternate reality
LadyJ: ITS TRUE
LadyJ: I mean, seriously.
LadyJ: Remus at school was lonely and terrified and going through hell that he couldn't confide to any of his classmates, and he finds these friends... and it's the first time since the werewolf bite ended his old life that he's been free and happy, and he and Sirius romp together as huge shaggy canines and run together under the moon and are best friends the rest of the month (and whatever else one may imagine) and then he thinks Sirius betrayed them! Thinks it all meant nothing. Thinks he's lost Sirius forever.
LadyJ: and then he comes back, and then he promptly dies horribly and senselessly and Remus doesn't even have time to mourn, because, war going on.
LadyJ: And Tonks is young and cute and she worships him a little and maybe, just maybe, it's a way to forget, a little? Move on, pretend that life continues even though his world has ended yet again? Maybe just... be HAPPY for a few hours?  Sirius wouldn't mind him being happy.
LadyJ: And then WHOOPS wand-point wedding. And he's a good man so he makes the best.
LadyJ: I'm telling you, that's what happened. It's just that the books are told from Harry's POV, and Harry is stupid and unpeceptive.
LadyJ: *shuts up*
Cay: now I feel sad for Remus.
Cay: That was a very impressive rant,
Cay: and I think there are too many things that we don't get because Harry's POV, and harry is selfish only cares about his own life.
LadyJ: Which is also the way to hand-wave how we never find out about Dumbledore.
Cay: good excuse.
LadyJ: *draws little hearts around Remus/Sirius*

I utterly adore my sister. For selfish reasons, cause she lets me ramble on at her at incredible length when I am in rant mode, but also because she is shaping up to be a squeeful and entertaining fangirl, not to mention discriminating and interesting and articulate and thoughful, which are basically the highest compliments I give people. Also, because she is shaping up so nicely into a potential little slasher. *happy* Now I think I'm obligated to go seek out light bantery mauraders-era Remus/Sirius for her just to seal the deal.
