Let me count the ways! Logic-wise: I have a thing about my timelines/AUs. So SG-1 went back to ancient Egypt and the Gate got taken. Either SG-1 influenced time, and Earth history would have branched off quite differently, or they didn't and everything would be essentially the same except for direct Stargate stuff--Ernest and Catherine's lives, and Jack, Daniel and Sam's lives. Daniel I can see struggling after his academic career crash, though I imagine he could also get a job teaching Latin and Greek at a private school just as easily as bargain basement ESL. Jack, if he survived his suicidal impulses, could be that crusty loner. But our brilliant Sam, raised by Jacob, who was fast-tracking in the Pentagon and headed for NASA ... how in the hell did she become that mousy miss?! I fail to see how anything they did in the timeline could have deflected Sam from her military career.

Characterwise: Daniel at least had the same stubbornness and brilliance and loyalty and bravery as our Daniel, so okay. Sam, as noted above--no. And Jack ... oh, Jack. One of the things I love about Jack is that he may look like a slacker, but in the field he's all business. Movie!Jack was suicidal and withdrawn, and not too sure about that geeky academic guy. But the second Daniel came through the wormhole, Jack was looking out for him. In the field you protect the civilians, primary mission. Moebius!Jack didn't come across that way at all. And the junior high-style cockblock of "I thought he was queer"? *retch* Not any Jack I can imagine. Plus, as a geeky smart girl myself, we do not fall for the juvenile jock types. Completely unrealistic, and that entire scene was a PTB wank. I'm definitely with you on it should have been Sam/Daniel if anyone.

Emotionally: As you said, the story is horrifically angsty, while the episode was played off for laughs. Yes there have been amazing fics to fill that in, but it seems strange that the show didn't acknowledge it--a big mismatch in tone. BTW, my favorite fix, if you haven't read it, is [livejournal.com profile] betacandy's brilliant You Can't Always Get What You Want. It's gen, but it unflinchingly and intelligently addresses the shippy stuff of the show, as well as tying up other loose ends. Seriously, highly recommended.
