On fandoms and TV

Random: I sure am glad that I heard a local pronounce it "Se-PUL-veda" before I went and said "sepul-VEE-da" out loud. Of course, I used to mercilessly mock people's pronunciation of Puyallup, so serve me right.
This meme is so 15 minutes ago and I didn't get it from anyone in particular but different versions have floated around everywhere and I think it's cute:
The one who seduced you and fucked you over and broke your heart in a million pieces and laughed about it:
Battlestar Galactica. Dude, such promise. A whole miniseries and a season and a half as the best science fiction to ever hit TV, bar none. Except that then, quick as throwing a switch, it SUCKED. And there will be no redemption.
The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp in the sheets:
Aww, Gilmore Girls. Those cute-teenage-boys and grumpy-diner-owners and overcaffienated best friends who talk too fast with too many cool references and wear fantastic clothing. Aww. And the West Wing, with the liberal daydream-come-true and the pedeconferencing and the wit and the talking too fast. How nostalgic I get for both of them!
The mysterious dark gothy one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 a.m. at weird coffeehouses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized he really was fucking crazy:
Hee hee. Deadwood. Also, possibly, the Discworld novels. I didn't expect to ever see those two things in the same category.
The one you spent a whole weekend in bed with and who drank up all your liquor, and whom you'd still really like to fuck again although you're relieved she doesn't actually live in town:
Harry Potter. I could be so obsessive about that fandom, so it's good that the series is over and I'm just enough outside the demographic and community that I can escape. But barely.
The steady:
I am SO going steady with Supernatural right now. There is nobody else for me. Well, okay, maybe Heroes too.
The alluring stranger whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with:
Buffy and Angel. Also X-Files. And Smallville, actually. And Doctor Who. Those are the TV shows that I know I would like, and know I would be fannish about, if I only gave them half a chance. I will get around to it, I swear.
Mr. Still Crazy After All These Years, the friendly ex you don't think about much but will always be delighted to see on the rare occasions when he's in town, and with whom you will inevitably stay up till 4 a.m. reminiscing and laughing about old times:
Star Trek. Man, no matter what I may think of its serious flaws as science fiction and as storytelling... that sure was fun back when, wasn't it?
The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with but ultimately you're just good buddies 'cause the friendship is there but the chemistry ain't:
Star Wars. We're good buddies, the two of us, and we have good times together. But nope, no real chemistry.
The guy that you just can't stop talking about, even though everyone else is getting ready to beat you to death for your own good:
Slings&Arrows. Seriously, people, one of the greatest shows ever made. Why has no one heard of it? Why does no one care? also, Rome. Why has everyone forgotten that wonderful show so soon?
The one you thought you were in love with until you realized he was never going to grow up:
Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, with George R R Martin's Song of Ice and Fire rapidly heading in that direction, as everyone who's talked with me about it knows.
The one who's never going to grow up, but you love anyway, because that's half the charm:
Pirates of the Caribbean!
The one you dated regularly because he was such a good time and knew how to keep you entertained but you've gotten jaded, the bloom has worn off, and you really can't be bothered anymore:
This is what happened to all the procedurals I used to watch. CSI, Bones, Monk, Psych, Numb3rs, NCIS... They've all gotten pretty boring, haven't they? House is the only procedural that I can still give a damn about, and it's going the same direction.
The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool guy except you can't seem to make it go anywhere:
Everything do to with comics. I would love to be a fan of Preacher, or of the X-men comicverse, or of V for Vendetta, or especially of Sandman. But... comics. They aren't TV, and they aren't books, and I just can't seem to GET them.
The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at him and thinking, "Him? How the hell did he land all these hot chicks?":
SG1 and SGA. I don't entirely get it. I also don't get 24 or the Sopranos or Desperate Housewives.
The one your friend has fallen for like a ton of bricks and whom he keeps babbling to you about on the phone for hours, and you'd be happy for him except you just know it's going to end badly:
Lost was completely this for me. I knew that show would break hearts long before it started showing its true colors. It never fooled me!
The one who got you first and made you finally understand the crazy things other people do when they're in love:
Lord of the Rings. Completely foundational experience for me.
The one who gave you the best damned summer of your life and who you measure all other potential partners against:
Firefly, who burned so brightly but was lost so soon... Everything will be measured against you, forever. RIP.
The new season of TV is starting, and I'm oddly disconnected from it. I do have two returning shows that I am just desperate to watch- SPN and Heroes. And yet, I have no one to watch Supernatural with, since C is still a season behind. And I actually have the first episode of Heroes, but haven't watched it yet. I'm saying it's because I need to watch the last few on DVD first, and also because I'm waiting for Dustin to have proper time. Really it's because I'm too afraid that Heroes won't be able to stand being shifted to a multi-season show, and don't want to see it go downhill. Also, they have so many damn characters that emotional connection is tough, especially since the huge cast means there will probably be some churn.
I am also likely to watch Eureka, cause Constance likes it, and House because House is comfort TV like mashed potatoes are comfort food, and Battlestar Galactica out of a bizzare misplaced sense of duty. There's tons of other stuff I want to watch too, of course- with Deadwood and Slings&Arrows topping the list- but that is all stuff from the past, stuff that is currently over which has just worked its way up my "I've gotta watch it someday" list.
Of the new shows, I can't seem to get interested in watching Reaper or Chuck. I would pretty much rather have a root canal than sit through Dirty Sexy Money or Californication. I WAS incredibly excited for the new Bionic Woman (Katee! Katee Sackhoff! Katee in a new show! Pretty pretty girlcrush!) except, of course, that everyone has now revealed the dirty secret that Bionic Woman sucks so bad it will keep you up at nights raging and fuming over its misogyny and ineptitude. So, nevermind.
That leaves only one show, Journeyman, which I am desperately excited for 1. Because I missed Quantum Leap the first time through, and 2. Because Kevin McKidd! On my TV again regularly! Kevin McKidd is MADE of awesome, you guys. So far the pilot has gotten a big old collection of "meh" from everyone, and I'm almost afraid to watch it because I want it to be awesome so bad. The torrent is coming, and I swear I'm actually nervous for this poor show. I suspect it won't make it.
