Well, I have gone back through
sga_santa and left fb for everything I read before. I’ve been hopping around a lot, avoiding total AUs and anything over 10k words. Instead, I’ve been hitting everything that features Lorne, Zelenka, Ronon, or says “humor,” only foraying into McShep when the plot looks good. Not sure why- just the mood I’m in.
Recs
First, the stuff featuring Ronon, Lorne, Zelenka, or Lorne/Zelenka:
That Which Does Not Kill. Radek starts to understand some things about being on an offworld team. Lorne/Zelenka preslash h/c. Not excessive h/c, and I love Radek’s internal voice and how well he keeps his head during this. And Lorne/Zelenka has become a new secret guilty pleasure rarepare of mine, in a major way, and I love Radek’s character evolution here.
Relating. Ronon discovers he has more in common with Radek than he thought. Not preslash, really, but I absolutely love both Ronon’s interior voice (Earth people are WEIRD) and Radek’s backstory.
Four Funerals and a Wedding. This is absolutely my favorite thing from this exchange so far. The first half (Take One) is the story of the Last Man alternate timeline -- a story I quite desperately wanted to write, but couldn’t get an in for. It turns out Lorne’s POV is absolutely the perfect in, and Lorne’s view of Rodney over those years is heartbreaking. Then the second half (Take Two) picks up our timeline from Last Man, with a wonderful Lorne POV of McShep ending with a wedding scene I actually didn’t hate. But the reason it’s in this rec category, and the reason it’s my favorite, is the utterly beautiful slow build of Lorne/Zelenka, their mutual attempt to protect John and Rodney, Lorne’s slow realization that it’s something else... I LOVE this.
Gen:
Batteries Not Included. Puppies! Terrifying deranged robot puppies! That is all.
McShep:
Live Gives You Lemons. The Lemon Incident. I love fic where other members of the expedition actually like Rodney or take Rodney’s side. And I especially like Lorne here, and his guts in standing up to Sheppard.
Happy Tails to You. One the one hand, this is complete and utter crack, handled with an absolutely straight face, with all the glee that can only come from something like very serious discussions of what Teyla’s tail looks like. On the other hand, it hits my biggest SGA kink: an exploration of queer Sheppard, a Sheppard who is always somehow out of step, withholding himself, keeping a secret.
On the Bunny Trail. I giggled like a madwoman the whole way through. This mystery author has an incredible knack for understated, non-slapstick humor, humor based on the perfectly plausible endless round of Pegasus galaxy wackiness and our team's reactions to it. Also, a beautiful look at the place Sheppard is in at the beginning of Season 5.
Faith Healing. Words cannot express my love of this plot. Go. Read.
Sensitivity. And Stuff. An utterly perfect little first time that manages to not demonize Keller, and to bring the understated giggles in a major way.
I still have some long ones I want to read, but that's it for now!
