I just think the plot holes and the frankly weird characters give fanfic writers (and the viewers who occasionally, very occasionally, feel like engaging their brain) so much more to work with. And yeah, the inconsistencies work particularly well for Rodney because it feels like someone is living *my life* on-screen; I try so hard to be a better person, and sometimes I fail, sometimes I succeed, and sometimes I forget where I've been and make the same mistakes over and over. It's so human, and it's one of Rodney's strengths - he's the true everyman. I'm a little worried, to be honest - I saw one of the producers of SGA gushing about how great it is that they're only making one show now so they can focus more. I fear the SGA writers' attempts at consistency!!!
