Yes! And that shot with him standing in the rain, thinking Elizabeth's been killed, as the camera pans out--very sexy anger there. *g* What makes that ep for me, though, is when John asks himself, "What would McKay do?" *dies*
On the escalation issue, I've never seen it as a problem, really. The wonderful thing about SGA has been the consistency of the writing and plotting. They mix up the antagonists and throw in random plot twists enough that even the smaller-scale cliffhangers are compelling. (That said, I'm not sure if I even remember what the S2 cliffie was, though S3's stands out.)
