Apocalypse No

Because I would be remiss if I didn't pass it on, The Periodic Table of Storytelling. There should totally be some kind of random-element-generator prompt meme, Y/N?

Via [personal profile] cofax7, the Guardian is doing some kind of SF thing.

Calvin & Hobbes futurefic gets me right where I live. Have Hobbes and Bacon part one and two.

Aliens, zombies, and plauges, oh my )

Thought-dump, fannish edition

Summer TV roundup, including Leverage and Eureka spoilers. Long and babbly. )

And two recs- SGA and Glam )

I always forget how many frogs you have to kiss to find the good stuff during Big Bang season, not to mention that I forgot that Kradam Big Bang even existed at all (I have so many more to get to!). This fic reading binge has involved lots of back-button usage and a huge backlog that I will eventually give up on, but it sure has been fun.

SGA Santa recs!

I adore fic exchanges.

The problem is that fics get posted in a flood, and I find (IMO) that they seem to get less feedback than they would have if they were posted outside the exchange. So I try really hard to do recs for exchanges.

I am so not fully caught up on [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa, and I won't be reading any more until after the Yuletide rush subsides (OMG you people have I said how much I love Yuletide? Highlight of my year), but here's a first-pass rec list! These are recs from among the shorter fics posted in the first half of the exchange. There are tons more I can't wait to read, after the New Year.

lj-cut is stealthy! )

And anybody who is not [livejournal.com profile] hilarytamar and guesses my [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa fic totally gets a drabble.

SGA Big Bang recs

Am not dead, just still doing the depression thing, hence the two-week turnaround time responding to communications, and the lack of Christmas cards. But I still love you all and miss you, okay? And I wrote my [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa fic, which turned out better than I expected, so that's made me happy enough to post.

Also! I got shiny snowflakes! You guys are so incredibly awesome. Big hugs to [livejournal.com profile] amara_m (I want to see you again, hon!), [livejournal.com profile] cormallen, [livejournal.com profile] rejeneration, [livejournal.com profile] advection, and [livejournal.com profile] adelate (You rock!).

A while ago I asked for SGA Big Bang recs, and got resounding silence. Plus, lots of the really good stuff I've been reading has had virtually no fb, and that seems like a sad, sad, sad thing to me.

So, let's do some recs

I have been reading. Then today at lunch I wrote! It sucked, yes, but still. If all goes according to plan, one day I may actually be a real fangirl again. (OMG I MISS IT. There is this whole whiny angsty post in my about frustration and procrastination and the problem of knowing what I want to be doing with my time but not being able to get from here to there)

I have my Yuletide canon to review, and my SGA exchange assignment, which I have no clue about. I defaulted the last time I tried to force myself to write via exchange, but Christmas is different. I can do this.

Recs! )

A collection of linkage

In which it is all hilarytamar's fault )

Catalysis for Dummies is the cutest John/Rodney AU in quite a while.

And a Kings rec, the first NC-17 Jack/David I have liked yet: All Tomorrow's Parties

Awesome linkage:

A Mathematical Limerick. I am fairly sure this wins the internet. (It works, as far as I can tell. I won't admit how tough it was to remember how to deal with that)

Now this is a man who understands procrastination: Part one, two, three, four, and five.

Random: From now on, I shall endeavor to keep Certera's Law in mind when selecting my online reading material. (Like I wasn't already)

2009-03-23 12:13 am

Look, it's not Kings! (Or: SG1 and SGA recs)

The thing about SF fandom, sometimes, is that the porn is hilarious. And I don't mean this in a bad way at all- not even a teeny-tiny bit. It's great.

I am speaking, you see, of [livejournal.com profile] john_farr, the multiple-AU built around that time John Sheppard went into Ponn Farr (subtitle: because mating cycles are hot!). Or at least, it starts that way (you should start here, which is short and sexy), and then balloons out into no less than four interconnected AUs where, due to Goauld manipulation, human physiology is very different. As an open 'verse the writing is inconsistent, of course- but might I recommend the sequel Skin Hunger, the John backstory Battlefield, and the Uni!John and Virgin!John AU branches?

And the thing about this is that I honestly have no idea if I have to hit my bunk or if I am just going to sit here giggling wildly. Because seriously: shit like this only happens in SF fanfic. Aliens make them do it! Ancient tech gives them telepathy/tentacles/an insatiable sex drive/whatever! Sex pollen! Elaborately constructed plotty setups that boil down to, "due to the applied phlebotinum, you must have sex or die. Get to it." And, seriously, it's ridiculous but it really hits the Id vortex buttons, doesn't it?

And just then I saw that [livejournal.com profile] paian posted fic, which always sends me into raptures of joy- but it turns out to be a double whammy. A sex pollen (in her warning, she says: aliens-gave-them-an-excuse-to-do-it. Truth in warnings! ♥) but also an alien-tech SF plot device that is on the face of it sort of ridiculous (in the best possible way) and yet allows for this intense, desperate, bizarre and disorienting non-con voyeurism thing that is hot as fuck and Jesus, I will be in my bunk.

Oh, science fiction. *rueful headshake* Ever since the original Star Trek writers came up with Ponn Farr, the descendants of which are God's gift to porn, I tell you. My love knows no bounds.

(And yes, I've been reading this stuff for a LONG TIME. I have no idea why the ridiculousness of it all hit me so hard just now)

Oh look. Another year.

Firstly, have some humor awesomeness: Dave Barry's year-end roundup. Do not attempt to consume beverages while reading.

Secondly, have some fannish humor awesomeness: The new year's resolutions of Dr. Rodney McKay, and the new year's resolution of Colonel John Sheppard. Similarly, do not consume beverages. Hee!

Everybody is doing year-end fic roundups. I can't, because I wrote so much anonymous Christmas fic and I just have to talk about it. So, tomorrow.

That said, I am a New Year's resolution ho )

You know, when I put it all in a list like that, it doesn't look like I've totally derailed my life and potential career, stranded myself in a city I hate, and wasted three years, doesn't it? That's because I didn't put "Fix the horrendous mess I've made of my life" on the list. It's all about the concrete, right?

More life year-end stuff )

Fandom update: I have gotten hooked on Leverage )

Now if I can just fend off the inevitable falling for Merlin...

Merry Christmas!

Just watched the Lost Treasure of the Grand Canyon. And, okay, it isn't as bad as MegaSnake or Sumuru, but it sure as hell ain't good. You know, if I were Michael Shanks, I would have started to object to being typecast quite a while ago (probably at least by the time they had him talk about Sumer and Babylon on Eureka- then again, didn't he play somebody totally different in Judicial Indiscretion? Maybe I should watch that). That is, if I wasn't busy objecting to being cast in such crappy movies.

Confidential to Michael Shanks:
Dear Michael,

Please, for the love of God, get a better agent. Also, your fake snooty British accent has not improved with age. I still love you, though
-Justine

End of SGA has leaked. Have not yet watched it. Won't, til after the New Year. Am trying not to think about it. V. sad.

This is probably the single best peice of writing meta I have ever seen, and has somehow managed to make all my difficulties with plot crystal clear to me, when a thousand writing metas haven't before.

You know how I said I was done with the [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa recs? I lied. Go read Short and Stout right now. Do not attempt to drink anything while you read it.

SGA recs

Well, I have gone back through [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa and left fb for everything I read before. I’ve been hopping around a lot, avoiding total AUs and anything over 10k words. Instead, I’ve been hitting everything that features Lorne, Zelenka, Ronon, or says “humor,” only foraying into McShep when the plot looks good. Not sure why- just the mood I’m in.

SGA Recs )
I still have some long ones I want to read, but that's it for now!

SGA crack rec!

A mystery author wrote me a SGA story! I said I liked most things, and prompted the "Daniel and Rodney snark fest of doom," among other things. She gave me The Daniel and Rodney Snark Fest of Pornographic Doom, which is a modification I highly approve of. Crack! Porn! Sex-obsessed Lanteans! Kinky Radek! Anthropologist Daniel! Snarky Rodney! Humiliation all 'round! Crackity-crack-crack-crack. *nods* This makes me squeal in glee.

Looks like there's tons of good stuff at [livejournal.com profile] sga_santa. I'll have to get reading.

Bye!

Bye everybody! I am off to the wilds of the the midwest and Great Lakes, to see [livejournal.com profile] wyomingnot, [livejournal.com profile] als_wonderland, and [livejournal.com profile] bd_black. And, you know, Chicago. I REALLY want to see Chicago.

Here, have a SGA rec to tide you over. Have you ever complained about how the show has handled Rodney's character growth inconsistently? That they forget just how much he's grown and changed since 48 Hours? That they don't seem to realize how John's plans are often bad plans, and sometimes John is in the wrong (And Teyla knows it)? Do you, like me, kink hard on amnesia?

Read Rewind, Reboot, Restore. Right now.

Okay. Bye. If I don't come back, tell my family I loved them. I shall probably Twit at you all- DragoJustine. I can't believe I was sucked into the Twitter vortex.

About the women in Whispers...

I've spent something like 12 hours in the car over the past four days, which explains all the tl;dr.

First, recs: )

I just reccd gen and femslash. Hold me.

I didn't feel the need to say anything about Whispers )

But, while we're rambling about the women in Whispers... )

Sometimes I really like writing Not!Fic like that. It's a whole lot easier than actual fic.

SGA rec and babbling

First, a flailingly fangirly rec: Clear Daylight, by [livejournal.com profile] nym777 (SGA John/Rodney NC-17)

I have no words for how gorgeous that is. The narrative voice is stunning, lyrical and poetic and full of unexpected connections and startling insights and gems of thought processes that are so perfect for the characters. She hits emotional notes of incredible complexity and intensity with an amazing, subtle touch. Most of all, though, there is this incredible sense of watching the birth of something so very fragile- this incredibly intimate connection between two men who are both so very bad at intimacy or connection, are simply too broken to possibly nurture this thing between them. The understated beauty and simplicity and fragility and emotional richness of the understanding they reach is just breathtaking.

I want to write like that when I grow up.

(Side note: I find myself drawn to Jack/Daniel angst because I am stunned by how inevitable and unshakable their bond seems to me; by how they are so inexorably tied together that absolutely no level of horribleness can possibly destroy that. And on the flip side, I am incredibly drawn to John/Rodney romance because of how beautifully unlikely and fragile and astonishing any possible connection between them seems to be. This is another way in which I love the intersections and overlaps and contrasts between these two pairings. I am truly in love with them as a pair of mirrors and parallels and complements, in a way I would never be for one of them alone. Even if Jack/Daniel does sort of have my heart and my muse right now)

Happy fourth!

So, have a happy strawberry-shortcake-and-fireworks day, y'all to whom it is relevant.

AND, READ THIS: Rodney McKay's Fourth of July, (McShep established relationship), because Rodney and Marines in a prank war is NEVER not awesome.
