How do you avoid procrastination?

My procrastination is becoming a Problem in my life. I remember I had techniques, back in undergrad, but I can't seem to remember what they are. There must be practical anti-procrastination advice on the internet, but if I spend hours reading it... I'm pretty sure that sort of thing is part of the problem.

The law school workload kept me away from NY Comic-Con this year, and I just realized I missed the signups for Muskrat Jamboree. And I barely knew about the jd_ficathon until stuff had already posted. Dammit, I refuse to let law school take my hobbies. Partly because, you know, hobbies keep you sane, but partly because I've met so many of the people I value most this way, and I just can't lose that. So... I'll have to figure something out.

Edited for linkspam: I realize that I am in danger of just linking to everything Abigail Nussbaum ever writes, but I wanted to point out her really amazing articulation of just what is wrong with SGU and, now, her take on what exactly is the difference between Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit. It's a compelling argument that the difference is not, in fact, maturity or complexity. Very good read.

Plus, she tosses off the observation that Bilbo Baggins and Arthur Dent have more in common than is apparent at first glance, which made me giggle. Oh, so true!

How much more school do you have left? And what type of law do you want to get into after school?

I just started at the end of August... so... two and three-quarters more years? So far it's great. And I have NO IDEA (which, I know, is bad and I need to get right on that).

I really enjoyed reading Nussbaum's piece on SGU. Also, apparently I'm not the only one who didn't completely love "200." Thanks for linking to it, and I'll tackle the LOTR piece soon. I don't entirely agree that SG-1 was a "trite, childish show" but that's likely in part because I watched it while reading fic alongside it that made more of the 'verse than what it was alone.

Perhaps you could budget for hobby time? For each "whatever" you accomplish, you get an hour to spend in any way you choose? I suck at time management, so I've got nothin' else.

I don't always agree with her, but I always think she's absolutely brilliant. I think a fannish lens really changes the way SG-1 looks- I mean, taking fanfic out of it, I can't really say she's *wrong* about SG-1. But I liked that because she made the point that it wasn't the planet-a-week space opera format or the, you know, sufficient lighting that made it childish- it would be possible for a SF show to be good and well written and adult without underlighting everything and trying to be Battlestar Galactica. Which is what I wanted to say, but she says things better.

Yeah, maybe I'll try that. Time management, I don't even know. I'm going to have to figure that out.
