SGA SQUEEEE!

Michael Shanks did a one-episode spot on Eureka (which is a cute show with great potential that actually SUCKS as SF, much to my great sadness). We hear his voice before we see him, and JESUS, his voice just kind of goes straight to the sex centers of my brain. (Which is good, because his dialog was idiotic. As so much of that show is. GAH, wasted potential) I want MORE of him so, so, so badly. I mean, just, GUH to the nth degree.

I just watched the SGA season premier. Actually, I watched it last night, went to bed, woke up, watched it again, wrote 1500 words, tried to pretend to be a responsible adult, and now I have it on in the background. I am, as [livejournal.com profile] miriad so wonderfully put it, squeeing my head off.

- I have read a bunch of "advice for writers" type things that say "plot doesn't really matter. When in doubt, blow something up." I kind of thing the SGA writers last season took that really literally, no? That amuses me SO MUCH.

-AIDEN! Except not. Even in a five-second dream sequence, I love you, Aiden. Except what was the POINT of that dream sequence? I mean, honestly, it doesn't do anything for the character we don't already know, and there are other ways to figure out he's injured. Then again, shows get written for people who aren't hardcore fans, so the fact that the John psychology is obvious, well, it might not be to some people.

-RONON! Oh God. Somebody needs to tell Jason Momoa that he isn't allowed to be that hot. No one is allowed to be that hot. Especially not covered with dirt and fake blood. There oughta be a law.

-Wow, somebody got a bigger CGI budget this season and wants to make sure they spend it all, no?

-Oh Lorne, you are so stoic.
Rodney: "I'm trying to keep my mind busy. Which is hard, 'cause it's, you know, it's my mind." *snerk* Oh RODNEY. I love you so much. And David Hewlett, your delivery is a thing of beauty.

-everything about trapped John and Ronon is wonderful and potentially shippy and in character and perfect. And John called Ronon "Chief" which kind of made me smile really wide.

-I care less about Teyla every season. Messianic/Prophecied/Horribly Significant Baby plotlines turn me off like you wouldn't believe.

-Our new female character looks pretty good in tight pants and a big gun. Given what a big deal they made of introducing her, I kind of thought she might have more than five lines, but this way is better- insert her naturally, develop by degrees. I approve.

-Ronon: "Would you leave me if I was stuck under there?"
John: "Yes"
Oh, John, you are such a really bad liar. It must kill you to say that. Good thing Ronon isn't an idiot. And knows you, by which I mean, has met you, ever, because it's not like you could fool anybody who has ever met you with that routine.

- John: "Gonna stop making fun of combat engineers, as of today, I promise." Hee. Oh John. You are adorable, and we all know you tease because you love.

-The "Shoot till we can't shoot anymore" and "been a pleasure/same" and GAH, if that isn't just textbook for the tear-jerking and there needs to be more John/Ronon in this fandom (sexual or friendshippy, either one, I don't care).

-This show has not quite decided what the rules about shields are- the shields need to go down for the jumpers to come on board, but not for them to get out? Bad SF writers.

-Can I take a moment to talk about how I apparently love Caldwell? It snuck up on me. I remember realizing I didn't actually dislike him anymore, but I don't actually remember when I started to like him, I just realized that at some unspecified moment I had come around to the conclusion that I really, really, really love him a lot. I love how much he loves his huge bad-ass ship and the way he gets all huffy when he's not allowed to blow things out of the sky, and how happy he gets when he is allowed. It's adorable. And the character has always (at least since he de-Gouldification) been really good with both Wier and Sam- good in a way that's so very simple and respectful and friendly without being flirty or shippy in any way at all. The character is occupying a weird space in the chain of command with an awkward relationship to the leader of Atlantis and he's been written as responding to female authority better than I think any other high ranking military man we've seen in the whole Stargate franchise, which just makes him a really, really likable character. Plus, I like that he calls Sam "Sam," and she calls him "Steven." It's one of those little hints of context- that they knew each other outside of and before Atlantis- that does a lot for me.

-Oh, John, you and your big dumb heroics. Poor brow-beaten Keller. You are so predictable and I love you for it a little bit.

-And Teyla's in labor. Quick! Everybody! Raise your hand if you suspected that might happen! Heh. Seriously. I asked myself, before I watched, "what is the most predictable and stereotypical thing that could possibly happen in this episode?" and the answer was, of course, "Teyla is in labor at the worst possible time and Rodney is the only one around to deliver the baby!" To his credit, David Hewlett did a really good job with it, because David Hewlett does a really good job with EVERYTHING.

Obviously it had to be Rodney, since he would handle it the worst and be the funniest, but I actually find myself really wishing it had been Ronon. Because even after 3 seasons, Ronon still comes off as so very young and so very sweet, and all his interactions with Teyla were great, and I just could watch him be like that forever, you know?

-Watching Ronon pick Teyla up like she weighs all of ten pounds just makes me squirm in my chair. Because he is huge and strong and sexy and huge and guh.

-That poor baby is gonna have, like, four dads. And Ronon will be so cute. But I really hope we don't see too much of this baby, because God, do babies tend to hijack TV shows and I really, really hate it.

-The ending with Sam was in some ways poor writing. It wasn't set up, in that we haven't seen anything change in the situation in Pegasus or her (formerly very good) relationship with the IOA that would possibly prompt this. I know that it happened because of casting issues, but surely they knew far enough in advance to write in believable tensions so it isn't so out of the blue? Or, alternatively, I really hope they do a good job of addressing WHY it was so abrupt later, but I don't have much faith. All in all, I'm not actually all that sad to see her go- I loved Sam so ludicrously much on SG1, but as part of a team and in a very specific dynamic. As a leader instead of as a team member she just didn't seem so awesome anymore, and while it's nice to have a familiar face, I just don't think she brought so much to Atlantis as a character, you know? Not any fault of hers, there just wasn't so much for the writers to do with her. Whereas I think Woolsey could bring some very interesting tensions and dynamic changes and plotlines. And I wish she hadn't grown out her hair.

In short: YAAAAY! That made me think and made me eager to see it back and also made me grin huge like a big dumb idiot, so, all good.

lol... MS was SO SO hot in that eppy of Eureka. All sweaty and grungy ;)

His eppy of CSI: Miami is on Tuesday night on AETV too :)

Oooh, thanks for the tip!

[identity profile] quarryquest.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 08:42 am (UTC)(link)
Trying not be spoilery here for Dragojustine but I used to be a CSI:Miami fan until they started to do daft things in Season Four ... which is the season we see Shanks in ...

That episode BTW ... the clothing they put on him (what I had begun to call 'Miami Brights') looks really strange [you may disagree] and poor David Caruso was doing his daft best to growl and be a pain in the neck.

I'm not sure if I swallow this, but I am sure I read somewhere that he was having problems acting with someone who might just be possibly slightly more **popular** than him. A lot of what was shot apparently was left on the cutting room floor. When there is another con with questions someone needs to ask Mr S what it was like working in CSI:Miami ... The scene with Calleigh wasn't too bad though apart from the fact its not his hand we see - the director's commentary on the DVD I have explained how they edited it in later.

p.s. When I saw Eureka my head went; 'Beneath the Surface' (Mr Shanks doing tough rather than prissy) and I thought he was having to hold back very hard from delivering that spiel about Google in a Daniel-like manner.

[identity profile] dragojustine.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. You know, I never watched CSI: Miami because detective/procedural shows pretty much bored me to tears by the time it started, and I thought it was easily the worst of the franchise. If I were Shanks acting with David Caruso, my problem wouldn't be that he was more popular than me, it would be that he's... *David Caruso.* Uh, no offense intended.

THAT SAID, if he is that kind of prima donna? That really sucks. It's always much nicer to hear that an actor you love is professional and a genuinely good guy and a joy to work with, you know? (One of the benefits of being a fan of Jensen Ackles, there) If only because that means he'll work on fewer projects with really good people.

Yeah, big Beneath the Surface vibe. Sounding a bit like Daniel is unavoidable, between some of the diction they gave him and some of the subject matter (the little speil about vanished civilizations), but I have to admit that when he said "the age old struggle between man and god" there was something about his inflection- and possibly also the eyebrows- that made me physically jump with surprise when the show cut back to Nathan instead of Jack.

And yeah, he sounded like he was struggling a bit to not sound more like Daniel- but then again, an actor doesn't have to be fantastically skilled or versatile for him to be hardwired straight to the sex centers of my brain.

[identity profile] quarryquest.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I should have said there that it was Caruso who has acting like a Prima Donna not Shanks (who apparently was the total professional as we would expect). Shanks is wayyy to good an actor not to do that (and Caruso sounds a bit like a twit IMHO).

CSI Miami used to actually be very interesting with some clever stuff to learn (e.g. I got all the knowledge I have about radiation from one episode and learnt about wireless internet access through another) and some interesting characterisations. Rory Cochrane was great until he left for example ... They had a great writer who wrote strong women characters and they covered interesting stuff like racism, weather patterns and ballistics. Then they decided to slide into soap opera and that was that ...

[identity profile] dragojustine.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 02:02 pm (UTC)(link)

I am *so* glad to hear that, you know? You really do *want* these guys you love to be professional and likable, and that's the first negative thing I'd heard about Shanks... so I'm glad I didn't hear it after all :) (And I'd always heard Caruso is a twit too)

Yeah, it wasn't really the show's fault, I just get unbelievably bored with procedurals after two seasons- I love the first two seasons of the original CSI, and then I'm all "okay, that was fun, NEXT!"

[identity profile] quarryquest.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
All the CSIs were good for about the first two seasons ... well maybe not CSI:NY (which I still prefer above all of them) that went off after only one. It was beautifully dark and with big city problems and cynical characters (it even had Jonas in one episode!)... and then the rebuilt the set and cheered everyone up. I went WTF??

p.s. Have you seen Shanks in Andromeda. That is very fun stuff and its so touching (and funny) to see him at one point looking adoringly at his new wife when in fact he should be glaring at her.

[identity profile] dragojustine.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 02:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll have to look for that!

[identity profile] quarryquest.livejournal.com 2008-06-23 02:15 pm (UTC)(link)
He was in the first season right at the end (episode 20 'Star Crossed') and the one which he did when he was on break from SG1 and had just got married was season three episode 21 'Day of Judgement Day of Wrath'.

Have you seen Judicial Indiscretion? Have a read of this and a dig about a the bottom of it and it should still be available for people to watch ...

ME TOO! I went from "Caldwell, ugh" to "Caldwell, I LOVE YOU!" and I can't quite place when it happened. I love, love, love him (and compared to Ellis he's just the best thing EVER)

[identity profile] dragojustine.livejournal.com 2008-06-24 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
I KNOW. Normally I can point to a moment and say "I knew I loved him right then!" but it wasn't that way with him.

Seriously feeling the Caldwell love here too! He kicked butt in this episode! I hope we get to see a lot more of him. Also, was that a new decorative plaque in the Daedalus? I hadn't noticed it before. Very impressive.

John was a bad liar, indeed. I even said out loud, "Liar!" when he told Ronon that.

Ooh, decorative plaque on the Daedalus? Missed it. Shall have to go look (I am bad at paying attention to sets)

I AGREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

teh bebe is going to have like 8 dads... because while Dad's One-Three are off-world, he'll probably get sent to Clone!Beckett/Zelenka and then the gate technician and then probably end up with an archeolinguist.....

very good review/summary :D
The ending did suck, it was pretty much a slap to her face. IN THE SGC EVEN!!! ON HER TRIP TO BA'AAL's EXECUTION!!!!!

[identity profile] dragojustine.livejournal.com 2008-06-26 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
8 dads? Totally. Most over-parented baby (by the weirdest and most unsuited collection of people) EVER. Heh.

random drive-by comment...

Colonel Skinner...er, Caldwell... has always floated my boat. But I actually did squee out loud this ep.

I hear you about the baby. Season five, yup, that's about standard time for uninspired writers to bring in a baby. Then we can look forward to the kid being five next season. ;)

But despite all the writers' stupid, it was a squeeful ep all around, yes.

LOL I kinda liked that the IOA were so abrupt in replacing Sam. To me, it read like they were caught off-guard when Elizabeth, their hand-picked rep, went kablooey, and then they were railroaded by the military because of the imminent threats from the various baddies, so they understood why Sam had to take command but they were *not* putting up with that shit permanently, dammit! And they threw a tantrum until they got their way. It shows how some people can be immensely stupid and self-serving in the face of a crisis.
Caldwell rocks my socks off.
And eeee, Ronon was so cute! When he and John walked in and Teyla had already had her baby, and Ronon immediately went straight over to her to check on her - I thought he was going to give her a hug, but then there wasn't time.

*thinky* As far as the politics behind replacing Sam- I LIKE that.

The thing with SGA is (and look, I know I squee my head off about it, because I am totally cool with appreciating a show on the level of "McShep! Also, Jason Momoa wears low slung pants! JOY!") that it's really not very well written AT ALL, So that when there are really good things going on like that, I'm fairly sure the writers didn't intend them. No, the writers just throw crap out, and it's saved only by fanwanks like that (which is so not an insult to you, because that makes wonderful, internally consistent sense, and I know firmly believe it). I just wish I believe the writers had ever INTENDED that, you know?

Oh, totally! The other thing that makes me shake my head is that there are so many different writers that there's very little consistency of characterisation - so they accidentally create these complex, contradictory people.

Re: Here via... someone else's journal; I forgot already

[identity profile] dragojustine.livejournal.com 2008-07-03 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes it's bad- like, the fact that Keller moved from utterly terrified and socially crippled to brave and spunky without enough of an arc. But sometimes.... I see all these people complain about how utterly inconsistent and contradictory McKay is, and I ADORE that about him. It's all one step forward and two steps back and sometimes it's like he makes a BREAKTHROUGH and then he's exactly like he was the very next episode. I don't know why it makes him such a compelling character to me when it's caused by bad writing, but... it WORKS for me.

I just think the plot holes and the frankly weird characters give fanfic writers (and the viewers who occasionally, very occasionally, feel like engaging their brain) so much more to work with.
And yeah, the inconsistencies work particularly well for Rodney because it feels like someone is living *my life* on-screen; I try so hard to be a better person, and sometimes I fail, sometimes I succeed, and sometimes I forget where I've been and make the same mistakes over and over. It's so human, and it's one of Rodney's strengths - he's the true everyman. I'm a little worried, to be honest - I saw one of the producers of SGA gushing about how great it is that they're only making one show now so they can focus more. I fear the SGA writers' attempts at consistency!!!
